voting starts. so i would suggest that these debates are critical for mitt romney. and, frankly, i think that -- you know, you can say he's not connecting with the middle class. well, obama you could make the argument, hurt the middle class, and think that's a big part of what the debates are going to be about. >> what do you think they're going to be about, chris, and how important are they? >> they're incredibly important. because romney has been so beaten up, they're going to take another look at him. if he does well in his debates, he will energize his campaign. i think you're going to have the campaign being about two things. the defendant is going to have to defend his record and there's going to have to be a very strong case for why his policies are wrong for the country. and basically governor romney is going to have to introduce himself at the same time he has to make a tough case against the president. that's a tough thick to do. president obama is a good debater. mitt romney is a good debater. i don't see any one of them falling flat. that's the problem for the romney debate.
. coming out of that first debate we were tied with george bush. so there is an opportunity for mitt romney if he takes advantage of it next wednesday night, to turn the momentum around. he not only has to win this debate but has to change the dynamics in this race. we know he's going to show up prepared, disciplined and aggressive, even tim pawlenty said that he's as good as it gets when it comes to debating. but the question is whether or not he's going to be able to talk to the american people specifically about what his plans are for this country. that's been a huge deficit for him over the course of this campaign. no specifics, no details. so i think that is part of the burden he carries next wednesday night. >> i suppose one of the problems for you is that barack obama is in the strange position of being the quite clear favorite. i don't think many incumbent presidents have that going into debates but people say i saw a poll this morning, he's up nearly 60% of americans believe obama will win the debates. that's always a rather precarious place to go into a debate, isn't it, as the cl

mitt romney to show up in denver. the first debate generally favor challengers. the president never really shined in. is that the right thing to do? >> strategically that's what campaigns do. when you look at -- i watched most of the republican debates. i think governor romney is a very good debater. there's certainly things you can't teach in debates, and that's in terms of how you attack your opponent. he had his bad moments, i.e., his 10,0$10,000 bet, but he was pretty solid. i remember during the primaries when we were prepping against him, it really wasn't -- he wasn't a candidate we were focused on in terms of being concerned about debating. all that being said, usually the challenger in this circumstance would go in with lower expectations. the problem here is because romney's campaign is in such a terrible position, and it's flailing. everyone is fixated on, is this the moment, the debate that turns things around? the expectations are higher for governor romney, and that is the problem. that's what the campaign and governor romney have put themselves in this position where i
